Bhagirathi ( Bengali ভাগীরথী) is the name of the 190 km long and most important side arm of the Ganges in its mouth delta .
course
The Baghirathi branches off from the Ganges / Padma in the Murshidabad district in West Bengal and bears the name Hugli after its union with the Jalangi River near Nabadwip . Via the Bhagirathi, the Ganges directly reaches the Bay of Bengal , whereas the main arm, the Padma , meets the larger Brahmaputra ( called Jamuna there) in Bangladesh and thus only indirectly, as the Lower Meghna , reaches the open sea.
Water flow
In the course of the last 250 years a slow decrease in the water flow of the Bhagirathi has been observed. The shift of the Ganges to the Padma arm is explained by tectonic uplift in the western Ganges delta and also as a consequence of an earthquake in 1782. At the same time the water flow of the Ganges main arm Padma increased. Since 1975, up to 1100 m³ / s have been supplied to the Bhagirathi from the Ganges at the Farakka Dam shortly before the border with Bangladesh via a canal, which at low tide can correspond to a third of the Ganges volume.
history
It is believed that the Bhagirathi formed the original river bed of the Ganges until the 16th century. The city of Nabadwip on its west bank was the capital of Bengal at the end of the 12th and early 13th centuries . Near the river repeatedly hit the British and Bengali regent military each other, including in the British rule in India founded Battle of Plassey (Palashi).
