Haora ( Bengali : হাওড়া , Hāoṛā ; English : Howrah ) is a city in the state of West Bengal in India with around one million inhabitants (2011 census) on the western bank of the Hugli , an estuary of the Ganges . It is the capital of the district of the same name . Haora is located directly opposite the metropolis of Kolkata (Calcutta) and is part of its agglomeration .

Haora is connected to Kolkata by three bridges; one of them is the striking Rabindra Setu (Haora Bridge), one of the landmarks of Kolkata. It is considered to be the busiest bridge in the world. The "Station Howrah Junction Railway Station " is Kolkata's main connection to southern and western India; he belongs to the Eastern Railway , one of the 16 regional companies of Indian Railways .

In 1785 there was still a small village on the site of Haora, but it developed quickly due to its proximity to Kolkata. Jute and cotton spinning and weaving dominated, making it an important station on the then East Indian Railway via Allahabad to the central and western provinces of India. Today Haora is an industrial city with metal and textile industry and has a shipyard and a river port.

The Great Banyan Tree

Haora has the oldest botanical garden in India ( Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden ). It has been around since 1786 and its main attraction is a 200 year old banyan tree , the second largest of its kind in India. The tea grown today in the regions around Darjiling and Assam was first introduced and cultivated here.

Another important institution in the city and the biggest tourist magnet is Belur Math in northern Haora, where the Ramakrishna Mission has its headquarters.
