Barasat ( Bengali : বারাসাত , Bārāsāt ; also বারাসত , Bārāsat ) is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal . It has about 280,000 inhabitants (2011 census) and is the seat of the administration of the district Uttar 24 Pargana . Barasat has been a city since 1869.
Barasat is located in the greater Kolkata area, eight kilometers northeast of Kolkata Airport in Dum Dum . It has an average height of three meters above sea level. NN.
National Highway 34 (towards Krishnanagar ) and National Highway 35 (towards Jessore , Bangladesh ) intersect here .
The first British settlers cultivated the indigo plant in India in Barasat, and the first plant for indigo extraction (Nilkuthi) is located there .
