Bidhannagar (including Salt Lake City English for "Salt Lake City") is a town in the Indian state of West Bengal .
Bidhannagar emerged in the early 1960s as a planned city and satellite city in the Uttar 24 Pargana district in the east of the Kolkata metropolitan area .
The city was named after the politician and Chief Minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy . Originally there was a salt lake in the area, but it has been filled. The population pressure in the metropolis of Calcutta, also due to immigration from neighboring Bangladesh , led to the decision to create new living space here. The city emerged in several stages. Several companies from the IT sector have settled in one district. It became a Notified Area in 1989 and a Municipality in 1995 . Finally, on June 18, 2015 , the newly created Municipal Corporation was created by merging the towns of Bidhannagar (215,000 inhabitants, 33.5 km²) and Rajarhat Gopalpur (400,000 inhabitants, 28 km²) .
