Maheshtala ( Bengali : মহেশতলা ) is a satellite city of Kolkata in the Dakshin 24 Pargana district in the Indian state of West Bengal with a population of around 450,000 . Since 2014 it has been the seat of a municipal corporation .

Maheshtala is located on the Hugli River about 10 to 20 km southwest of Kolkata at an altitude of about 8 to 9 m above sea level. d. M.

Maheshtala is a satellite city of Kolkata; the majority of the immigrant residents are 58% Hindus and 41% Muslim ; Christians , Jains , Sikhs and Buddhists form small splinter groups. As is customary in northern India, the male population is around 12% higher than the female population.

economy

Until the 1950s, Maheshtala was little more than a larger village in which agriculture determined the life of the inhabitants. Craftsmen, small traders, service providers and smaller industrial companies of all kinds have settled in the fast-growing city. A college of the University of Calcutta has also sprung up here.

history

The city of Maheshtala has emerged from nothing since the 1960s and is constantly growing.
