The University of Calcutta ( Bengali কলিকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় , Hindi : कोलकाता विश्वविद्यालय ) is a state university in Kolkata , in the Indian state of West Bengal . With a good 100,000 undergraduate students and 5,500 postgraduate students, it is one of the most important universities in eastern India . It was founded on January 24, 1857 on the model of the University of London , making it the oldest university in India based on the European concept.

In addition to the main campus locations on College Street , in Rajabazar ( Rajabazar Science College Campus ) and Alipore , there are other branch offices in the area around Calcutta , as well as numerous colleges affiliated with the university. The most prestigious of these is the Presidency College , which has existed since 1817 and has been named since 1855.

The university is one of the most recognized universities in India.
