Paramahansa Yogananda ( Bengali : যোগানন্দ Yogānanda ; civil Mukunda Lal Ghosh ; born January 5, 1893 in Gorakhpur , Bengal ; † March 7, 1952 in Los Angeles , USA ) was an Indian yoga master , philosopher and writer .

In Yogananda his followers see - they worship him as their guru - a Premavatar , a divine incarnation . As the founder of the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS) (founded in 1917) and the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) (founded in 1920, both in the USA ), he did Kriya Yoga , which is understood as part of Raja Yoga , in the West known.

Beginnings

Yogananda grew up in a wealthy family. His father Bhagabati Charan Gosh (1853-1942) was a high-ranking official on the Indian railroad. His mother Gyana Prabha Ghosh (1868–1904) died early. The internationally known bodybuilder and Hathayogi Bishnu Charan Ghosh is one of his numerous siblings . Yogananda met his guru Yukteswar Giri in 1910 at the age of 17. After graduating in 1915 from Scottish Church College , attached to the University of Calcutta , he joined an order . In 1917 he founded the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS) and a boys' school in Ranchi . Here he combined modern training methods with yoga training and spiritual techniques. Twenty years after joining the Swami Order, Yogananda received the title Paramahansa from Yukteswar , which means "supreme swan", a Hindu honorary title.

Kriya Yoga

Yogananda worked in the West on teaching Kriya Yoga , a spiritual technique. Yukteswar himself was a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya , who in turn is said to have been a disciple of Mahavatar Babaji . It was also Babaji who is said to have revived Kriya Yoga, and through Lahiri Mahasaya he is said to have begun to ensure the renewed spread of this technique. Yogananda eventually brought these to the West.

Lecture tours in the west

Yogananda was prepared for his mission in the West through extensive training courses from his guru, Yukteswar Giri. He was reluctant to leave India and it was to be a goodbye forever. In 1920 he accepted an invitation to participate as an Indian delegate at the "Congress of Religious Liberals" in Boston . He stayed in the west and lectured all over the American east coast in the years that followed. In 1924 he went on a lecture tour across the North American continent, where he filled large halls, such as Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles , to the last seat. In 1925 Yogananda established the headquarters of the SRF, the International Mother Center, in Mount Washington (Los Angeles) and devoted himself to building this organization in the following years.

In 1931 he met the future president of SRF Daya Mata (real name Faye Wright) in Salt Lake City, Utah, and just one year later Rajarsi Janakananda (real name James J. Lynn) in Kansas City, Kansas, president of the SRF between Yogananda and Mata. He continued his lecture tours. Some of his students and closest confidants supported him in building up the worldwide organization or helped him materially. In 1927, the then American President Calvin Coolidge received him at the White House. In 1935 he made an 18-month trip through Europe and back to his homeland, India. India later honored Yogananda with a special stamp . On his travels Yogananda met well-known personalities such as Therese Neumann , the Hindu saint Anandamayi Ma , Mahatma Gandhi , Rabindranath Tagore and the Nobel Prize winner and physicist CV Raman . The 1930s were marked by Yogananda's withdrawal from public life and turning to writing in the seclusion of Encinitas in order to bring his teachings closer to future generations.

While on a trip to the USA in 1952, Yogananda suffered a fatal heart attack at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel while giving a speech in honor of the Indian Ambassador Binay Ranjan Sen.

Yogananda first presented his teaching in 18 lesson letters, which were supposed to prepare for the Kriya Yoga initiation. The community of self-realization he founded (SRF), registered as a church in the USA, has added more than 180 letters to these letters to date. In 1946 he published the Autobiography of a Yogi , which became an important work for the understanding of Indian philosophy in the West. This work, the authentic biography of an advanced yogi, has been translated into countless languages and quickly developed into a yoga classic worldwide.

At the same time, Yogananda worked intensively on his comments on the Bhagavad Gita , God Talks with Arjuna , as well as those on the New Testament , i.e. on the Christian Bible , The Second Coming of Christ, The Resurrection of the Christ Within You , which could not be published during his lifetime . In his commentaries on the New Testament Yogananda elaborated what he believed to be a fundamental unity between the teaching of Christ , the teaching of Krishna and classical yoga .

To this day, Yogananda's humanitarian life's work is managed by the organizations he set up, the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) in the West and the Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (YSS). These organizations have affiliated temples and meditation centers around the world. After Yogananda's death in 1952, Rajarsi Janakananda (James J. Lynn), a close confidante of Yogananda, headed the organization. He was followed in 1955 by Daya Mata (Faye Wright), a long-time student of Yogananda, as president. Sri Daya Mata passed away on November 30, 2010 after serving as President of the SRF / YSS for more than 55 years. Mrinalini Mata was President from 2011 to 2017. Her successor is Brother Chidananda.
