Heinrich Blochmann

Heinrich Blochmann (born January 8, 1838 in Dresden , † July 13, 1878 in Calcutta ) was a German orientalist and university professor in India.

Life

Blochmann was the son of the printer Ernst Ehrenfried Blochmann and a nephew of Karl Justus Blochmann .

After attending the Kreuzschule , Blochmann studied Oriental Studies and Persian Language with Heinrich Leberecht Fleischer at the University of Leipzig from 1855 . In 1857 he became a member of the Corps Lusatia Leipzig . He made a name for himself in recruiting and brought Richard Andree to the Corps. He fought 5 lengths , including a PP suite . In 1857 he continued his studies at the University of Paris with Haase . Because of his interest in India , he went to England in 1858 and entered the British Army , with which he came to the place of his scientific interest as a simple soldier. His special language skills became known during the crossing. When he arrived in India, he was entrusted with office work at Fort William College and gave Persian lessons . After a few months he managed to retire from the Army and became an interpreter for the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company . On the mediation of his newly found friend William Nassau Lees , Blochmann became assistant professor for Arabic and Persian at the madrasa in Calcutta founded by Warren Hastings in 1781 at the age of 22, and since 2007 at Aliah University . In 1861 he acquired the examination subject Hebrew the MA and the LLD by the newly founded 1857 University of Calcutta . From 1862 to 1865 he was Vice Rector and Professor of Mathematics at Doveton College in Calcutta and was reappointed to the Madras of Calcutta in 1865. As the successor of William Nassau Lees, he became head (principal) of the madrasa in Calcutta after his death and remained in this position until his death. He translated many works from Arabic and Persian into English and studied the political and social history of Islam in India. From 1868 he was philological secretary of the Asiatic Society of Bengal . He was only 40 years old.
