Richard Andree (born February 26, 1835 in Braunschweig , † June 22, 1912 in Munich ) was a German geographer , cartographer and ethnographer .

Life

Richard Andree studied natural sciences and especially geology at the University of Leipzig . In 1857 he became active in the Corps Lusatia Leipzig , whose history he later extensively researched. After completing his studies, he worked as a smelter in Bohemia until 1863 . From 1865 he worked as a private scholar in Leipzig.

He devoted himself later as his father Karl Andree of geography and was for his preference for ethnography known about professional circles.

As co-founder and head of the cartographic institute of the Velhagen & Klasing publishing house in Leipzig from 1873 to 1890, he also dealt with cartography . He played a major role in the creation of the physical-statistical atlas of the German Reich and in school atlases . He also worked as an editor for the scientific journal Globus . Andree's works also influenced Arnošt Muka's research into the cultural life of the Sorbs . Since 1903 Andree was married to the Austrian folklorist Marie Andree-Eysn . Richard Andree died at the age of 76 while on a train ride from Munich to Nuremberg .

As a representative of comparative ethnology , Andree represented the idea of the ethnologist and cultural historian Adolf Bastian that all peoples had gone through the same stages of development and therefore developed the same beliefs. He tried to substantiate this thesis by proving that all races believed in ghost figures such as vampires and werewolves . Andree claimed that the Slavic peoples, like the Jews, were "naturally" inferior peoples.
