The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) is a research institute that is dedicated to historical, economic and political science research into Eastern and Southeastern Europe . In the Science Center for Eastern and South Eastern Europe Regensburg, it cooperates with the Institute for Eastern Law and the Hungaricum - Hungarian Institute (HUI) as well as the Research Center for German in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe (Fz DiMOS). The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies researches and provides information on the developments in the states of the former Soviet Union and Southeast Europe. It is supported by the Foundation for Research into Eastern and Southeastern Europe . It cooperates closely with the University of Regensburg through its scientific directors . It promotes and publishes scientific work, holds scientific conferences and maintains a scientific library. The core competence included transnational basic research and the publication of reference works, handbooks and source editions as well as specialist monographs.

The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Research started its work on January 1, 2012 as the successor to the East European Institute and the Southeast Institute . On January 1, 2017, the IOS was accepted into the Leibniz Association and thus into the joint funding of the federal and state governments.

The library and electronic research infrastructure division operates a special library with 330,000 media units. Through digitization projects, he contributes to the research support of the staff of the institute and the scientific community. As part of osmikon , the library maintains the article database Eastern Europe ; for the specialist portal IREON she evaluated the literature of Southeast Europe.
In the history work area , historical questions on the interdependencies in Eastern and Southeastern Europe are examined. Using comparative approaches, historical processes of state and social change are researched. In addition to a series of books and basic works with the yearbooks for the history of Eastern Europe , the Southeast Research and Southeast Europe for the East and Southeast European research, central journals are published.
The economics department focuses on research into the causes and consequences of institutional change in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The focus is on researching the connections between the labor market and migration as well as the links between technical progress and economic development. With the publication of the journal Economic Systems and other information offers, science-based services are also provided.
The junior research group Frozen and Unfrozen Conflicts examines the dynamics of conflicts and cooperation in the areas of the former Soviet Union and former Yugoslavia.
