The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) is a research institute that is dedicated to historical, economic and political science research into Eastern and Southeastern Europe . In the Science Center for Eastern and South Eastern Europe Regensburg, it cooperates with the Institute for Eastern Law and the Hungaricum - Hungarian Institute (HUI) as well as the Research Center for German in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe (Fz DiMOS). The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies researches and provides information on the developments in the states of the former Soviet Union and Southeast Europe. The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Research started its work on January 1, 2012 as the successor to the East European Institute and the Southeast Institute . On January 1, 2017, the IOS was accepted into the Leibniz Association and thus into the joint funding of the federal and state governments.

The library and electronic research infrastructure division operates a special library with 330,000 media units. Through digitization projects, he contributes to the research support of the staff of the institute and the scientific community. The economics department focuses on research into the causes and consequences of institutional change in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The junior research group Frozen and Unfrozen Conflicts examines the dynamics of conflicts and cooperation in the areas of the former Soviet Union and former Yugoslavia.
