The Hungarian Institute Munich ( UIM ; Hungarian : Müncheni Magyar Intézet or MMI ) is a research facility founded in 1962 by the Science Center for East and Southeast Europe Regensburg . It was located in Munich until 2009 , but then moved to Regensburg to further develop Hungarology as an interdisciplinary regional science . The sponsors, the Bavarian State Ministry for Science, Research and Art and its Hungarian counterpart, agreed to the move. The Institute officially called since Hungarian Institute in Research Center for Eastern and South Eastern Europe in Regensburg , but the acronym UIM is retained and the corresponding support association continues to reside in Munich. The UIM acts as the publisher of the Hungary Yearbook and the Studia Hungarica , which are published by the Hungarian Institute Munich (VUIM). In the first statute of 1962, the objective was: "Care and promotion of Hungarian science and culture and their utilization for practice". In the course of the suppression of the Hungarian people's uprising, it was in the anti-communist tradition and referred to the Hungarian Institute of the former Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin .

The Hungaricum - Hungarian Institute, founded in 2015 as the successor to the Hungary Center of the University of Regensburg, which was established in 2012, is part of the East, East-Central and Southeastern European focus at the science location Regensburg. The tasks of the HUI include, in particular, the networking and promotion of teaching about Hungary in Regensburg, especially in the context of the additional training "Hungaricum", the initiation and implementation of Hungary-related research projects and the transfer of knowledge about Hungary to both the university and the wider public. The HUI is supported by the Faculties for Philosophy, Art, History and Social Sciences and for Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies, which decided to found the HUI as a scientific institution in accordance with the Bavarian Higher Education Act in the 2014/2015 winter semester. To finance the HUI, the University of Regensburg signed a target agreement with the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture , Science and Art and the Balassi Institute (Budapest) on December 5, 2014. The establishment and development of the HUI are part of the integration of the Hungarian Institute at the University of Regensburg , the scientific and cultural institution of the Hungarian Institute Munich e. V., to the University of Regensburg. Hungary and the Hungarian Institute Munich e. V. participate in the financing with contractually agreed or earmarked contributions to the HUI.
