The Hungary Yearbook was founded in 1969 by Georg Stadtmüller (1909–1985) as part of the Hungarian Institute in Munich as an international magazine for customers of Hungary and related areas .

The magazine came from Volume 1 (1969) to Volume 6 (1974/1975) by Verlag v. Hase & Koehler, Mainz, from Volume 7 (1976) to 18 (1990) in Verlag Dr. Dr. Rudolf Trofenik , Munich. From volume 19 (1991), the publishing duties are incumbent on the Hungarian Institute Munich, which is responsible for the distribution of the entire production. The employees of the Hungarian Institute in Munich are responsible as editors and editors. They are supported by a 15-strong international editorial committee. From volume 26 (2002/2003) the subtitle reads Journal for Interdisciplinary Hungarology .

The Hungary Yearbook (UJb) makes relevant works by Hungarian and non-Hungarian authors on the history, culture, politics, society and economy of Hungary, as well as the areas connected to Hungary through diverse relationships, available to international experts in German or another Western language. It promotes cross-border cooperation between the various branches of the interdisciplinary regional science of Hungarology . Its time frame extends from the Middle Ages to the present. It consists of the sections Treatises, Research Reports, Communications, Lectures, Meetings and Chronicles .

Another series of publications by the Hungarian Institute in Munich is Studia Hungarica .

The publishing supervision of the two series - including the management of the continuation, exchange and specimen copies - from Volume 33 of the Hungarian Yearbook and Volume 53 of the Studia Hungarica has been transferred to the Verlag Friedrich Pustet, Regensburg. The Hungarian Institute Munich publishing house continues to be responsible for the distribution and exchange of volumes 1–32 of the Hungarian Yearbook and 1–52 of the Studia Hungarica.
