Institute for Eastern Law (Association)

The Institute for Eastern Law e. V. is an association for research into legal developments in Eastern European countries. The association was initially based in Munich , since 2007 Regensburg has been the association's headquarters . Friedrich-Christian Schroeder has been the scientific director of the institute since 1973 .

history

The association was founded on October 1st, 1957 as a legal association on the initiative of Reinhart Maurach . Maurach held the chair for criminal law at the University of Munich and was previously director of the Institute for Eastern Law at the University of Breslau. In addition to Maurach, the founding members included two professors from the University of Munich, Murad Ferid and Eugen Ulmer , and Bernhard Pfister from the University of Political Sciences in Munich, the president of the investigative committee for Freedom Jurists. V. Horst Erdmann alias Theo Friedenau, the former ministerial director in the Bavarian Ministry of Justice Hans Walther and the chairman of the general student committee of the University of Munich. Maurach and Horst Erdmann took over the management. Maurach also became scientific director of the institute.

goals and tasks

The primary goals were initially to research the law of Eastern European countries and to promote the exchange of scientific experience. The institute also published a magazine called “Recht in Ost und West” every two months.

The institute is still concerned with legal developments in Eastern European countries. It prepares reports, studies and provides legal advice on foreign law. Publications include the Yearbook for Eastern Law and Economics and Law in Eastern Europe . The institute regularly organizes seminars and international conferences on the subject.
