Reinhart Maurach (born March 25, 1902 in Simferopol , Russian Empire , † June 11, 1976 in Gardone Riviera , Italy ) was a German lawyer .

Life

Maurach came into contact with the Eastern European Institute in Breslau while studying law and political science. During his studies he became a member of the AMV zu Würzburg . In 1926 he became head of department there and, despite other activities, remained associated with the institute until 1940. In 1930 he became a judge. In 1937 extensive proceedings were brought against him with charges of pro-Bolshevik activity. Although he was released from the East European Institute in Breslau, he was not convicted. In 1939 Maurach published his work Russische Judenpolitik, propagating that the "Jews" were a threat to Russia. In 1940 he became a lecturer at the "Shock Troop Faculty" in Breslau, which resulted in rehabilitation, as the title "Shock Troop Faculty" was reserved exclusively for law and political science in Kiel, Breslau and Königsberg. In the following period Maurach published 21 anti-Semitic articles in various journals. He also published a book in 1940 with the title "Beginnings of a Völkischer Schutz", in which he justified the Nazi racial legislation by means of historical comparative law.

After an appointment as a lecturer at the University of Breslau in 1940, he was appointed associate professor at the University of Königsberg in 1941 . There he founded the " Institute for Eastern European Law ", of which he became director. Eastern law, especially Russian law, was the primary subject of his academic work alongside criminal law. At the end of the Second World War he was seriously injured and taken prisoner by Russia, but was soon released. He was part of the so-called "professors group" of the Gehlen organization , which provided them with studies for a fee. From 1948 Maurach was able to continue his work at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he became a full professor of the law faculty. In 1951 he was appointed to the Johann Gottfried Herder Research Council in Marburg.

Maurach was involved in numerous Eastern scientific associations and institutions. In 1957 he played a key role in founding the Institute for Eastern Law in Munich, acted as a board member of the association and at the same time as its scientific director. In addition, he made a name for himself as a criminal law expert. As an emeritus he also taught at the University of Politics (Munich) until shortly before his death. In 1976 he died of a stroke while on vacation.

Publications

Maurach published regularly in the "Zeitschrift für das Ostrecht" and, from 1934, in the successor organ "Zeitschrift für das Eastern European Law". In 1939 he published the volume "Russian Jewish Policy". After 1945 he worked as editor and co-editor of several legal journals and wrote standard works on the general and special sections of the Criminal Code .
