The carnival in Hanover is one of the German carnival strongholds in northern Germany . An independent carnival culture has developed in Hanover since the early 1990s . The Hanoverian kings and Hanoverian electors celebrated the Venetian Carnival in the 17th to 19th centuries . However, this tradition was not continued. In 1949, the first Hanoverian carnival club, the Funkartillerie Blau-Weiss, Battery South, Hanover-Döhren eV , whose origins go back to 1888, was founded. Currently (2019) there are 14 carnival clubs in the Hanover area . The carnival parade has been held since 1992 and is the highlight of the Hanoverian carnival.

Songs

In Hanover, both the term “Carnival” and the term “Fasching” are used. The traditional carnival greeting is "Hannover Helau". The Hanoverian carnival anthem is the song "Viva Hannovera", a modification of " Viva Colonia ". But traditional songs are also cultivated. The songs "Die lustigen Hannoveraner", "In Hannover an der Leine" and "Unser Niedersachsenland" belong to the repertoire.

The carnival parade takes place on the Saturday before Shrove Monday. The two-kilometer train usually starts at 1:11 p.m. in Culemannstrasse (near the New Town Hall) and ends at the Ernst-August brewery. There is a stage with a program on the corner of Seilwinderstraße and Osterstraße (near the World Exhibition Center ). The procession consists of around 1,500 carnivalists from Hanover and Northern Germany , many chapels and around 20 floats and convertibles. Five tons of camels are thrown from the wagons . Between 80,000 and 100,000 spectators line the roadside. After the train, the after-train party takes place in the Ernst-August brewery.

Rose Monday is not a public holiday in Lower Saxony. Nevertheless, on this day, many kindergartens and schools celebrate in carnival disguise. The city's largest Rose Monday party takes place in the evening in the Ernst-August brewery.
