Viva Colonia is the title of a carnival song by the Cologne band Höhner , which came onto the market in 2003 and became known throughout Europe.

History of origin

The melody of the song Viva Colonia ("Es lebe Köln") is based on the refrain of the public domain folksong Im Wald, There Are the Robbers and on an Irish folk tune. The text, which is largely sung in Kölsch , represents a hymn to the city of Cologne, spreads local color via the 1. FC Köln and the KEC as well as Kölsch , the KVB , the CSD and other Cologne peculiarities and expresses the Cologne way of life. The song, written by Hannes Schöner , Peter Werner-Jates , Henning Krautmacher , Ralf Rudnik and Janus Fröhlich , was produced by Thomas Brück . The catchy, mostly High German chorus contributed to the success of the song:

“Always there, that’s great! Viva Colonia!
We love life, love and lust.
We believe in God and are still thirsty. "
