Alipur ( Bengali আলিপুর Ālipur ; also Anglicized Alipore ) is a suburb of Calcutta and at the same time the capital of the district Dakshin 24 Pargana in the Indian state of West Bengal .

history

Alipur was founded by the British around the same time as Calcutta. Warren Hastings , the then governor of Fort William , had his official residence ( Belvedere Estate ) built here at the end of the 18th century . The suburb gradually developed into the most exclusive and expensive residential area of ​​Calcutta; In addition, several states, including Germany, set up their consulates here after the capital of India was moved from Calcutta to New Delhi (1910).
