The Uttar Dinajpur district was formed in 1992 from the former West Dinajpur district.

The population was 3,007,134 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 23.15% and was therefore very high. Uttar Dinajpur has a gender ratio of 939 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 59.07% in 2011 , an increase of almost 12 percentage points compared to 2001. However, literacy is thus far below the national average and is one of the lowest in West Bengal. Almost 49.9% of the population are Muslims , approx. 49.3% are Hindus , 0.6% are Christians and 0.2% did not indicate any religious affiliation or belonged to other religions. 16.1% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
Almost 12.1% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Raiganj with 183,612 inhabitants.
