Jalpaiguri ( Bengali জলপাইগুড়ি জেলা IAST Jalapāiguṛi jelā ) is a district of the Jalpaiguri division of the Indian state of West Bengal . The headquarters are in the city of the same name, Jalpaiguri .
On June 25, 2014, part of the district was separated and now forms the newly established Alipurduar district .
geography
The district of Jalpaiguri extended before the separation of the district of Alipurduar in 2014 over an area of 6,245 km² (thereafter 3386.18 km²). It borders in the northwest on the Darjiling district , in the northeast on the Kingdom of Bhutan , in the south on the Republic of Bangladesh and in the southeast on the Koch Bihar district . The landscape is largely dominated by mountains and rivers - Tista , Torsa , Jaldhaka and Raidak .
The average annual rainfall is 3160 mm. The temperature is between 10.8 ° C and 30.9 ° C, depending on the season. The average humidity is 82%.
In 1992 the first national park was opened with the Buxa National Park, which has an area of 117 km². In 1994 the Gorumara National Park was opened, which has an area of 79 km².

Before the separation of Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri had a population of around 3.87 million people (as of 2011) and was 66th out of 650 in India. Between 2001 and 2011, the population grew by an average of almost 14%. It has a gender ratio of 954 women to 1,000 men. The literacy rate is 74%.
economy
Jalpaiguri is one of the poorest regions in India. In a national comparison, it is one of the 250 poorest districts out of a total of 601. The main branches of industry are tourism , tea cultivation, and agriculture and forestry.
