Pashchim Medinipur ( Bengali : পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুর , Paścim Medinīpur ; English : Midnapore West ) is a district in the west of the Indian state of West Bengal . It was created on January 1, 2002 by dividing the former Medinipur district into a western and an eastern part. It borders the states of Odisha and Jharkhand and the West Bengal districts of Purulia , Bankura , Hugli , Haora and Purba Medinipur . The seat of the district administration is in Medinipur .
The district extends over an area of 9,368 km². The population was 5,913,457 in the 2011 census. This corresponds to a population density of 631 inhabitants per square kilometer. Pashchim Medinipur consists of four sub-divisions , which are named after their largest towns, Kharagpur , Medinipur , Jhargram and Ghatal .
The main educational institutions are the Vidyasagar University in Medinipur and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur .
history
On May 28, 2010, Maoist Naxalites carried out an attack on the Jnaneswari Express from Haora to Mumbai, southeast of the village of Manikpara . The train derailed and an oncoming freight train drove into the scene of the accident. The accident left 148 dead and more than 200 injured.
