Kharagpur ( Bengali : খড়্গপুর , Khaṛagpur ) is with around 207,000 inhabitants (2011 census) the largest city in the West Bengal district of Pashchim Medinipur in India . It lies at an average height of 28 m .
According to some researchers, Kharagpur is already mentioned in the Mahabharata , the Indian national epic - the demon king Hiramba is said to have ruled here. According to historical tradition, Kharagpur was still a small village in the 16th century and was surrounded by jungle; large parts of the surrounding area were under the control of Orissa . With the increasing influence of the English, the village of Hijli , located near Kharagpur, developed into a small port town. Between 1687 and 1886, Kharagpur belonged to the former kingdom of Hijli ; During this time, the Bengali Temple was erected in the village of Malancha, only five kilometers away (→ Weblink).
Established in 1950, the elite IIT Kharagpur University is the oldest Indian Institute of Technology .
Since the end of the 19th century the place has been connected to the Indian Railways network. There is a direct connection to Haora . At 1,072.50 meters in length, the Kharagpur platform is one of the longest in the world.
