Medinipur ( Bengali : মেদিনীপুর , Medinīpur ; English : Midnapore ) is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal with about 170,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

It is the administrative center and the second largest city in the Pashchim Medinipur district after Kharagpur . The city was founded in 1865. Since 1981 Vidyasagar University has been located in the city .
