Purba Medinipur ( Bengali : পূর্ব মেদিনীপুর , Pūrba Medinīpur ; English : Midnapore East ) is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal . It was created on January 1, 2002 by dividing the former Medinipur district into a western and an eastern part. It borders the state of Odisha and the West Bengal districts of Pashchim Medinipur , Haora and Dakshin 24 Pargana . The district administration is based in Tamluk .
The district extends over an area of 4713 km². The population in the 2011 census was 5,095,875, 10 years earlier it was 4,417,377. Purba Medinipur consists of four sub-divisions , which are named after their largest towns, Tamluk , Contai , Egra and Haldia .
