Contai , also Kanthi , ( Bengali কাঁথি Kā̃thi ) is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal .
The city belongs to the Purba Medinipur district . Contai has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 20 wards (constituencies).
Demographics
The city's population is 92,226 according to the 2011 census. Contai has a gender ratio of 881 women per 1000 men, a male surplus that is common for India. The literacy rate was 93.7% in 2011. Almost 80% of the population are Hindus , around 20% are Muslims and less than 1% belong to another or no religion. 9.2% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
