Tamluk ( Bengali : তমলুক , Tamaluk ) is the administrative seat of the West Bengal district of Purba Medinipur in India with around 65,000 inhabitants (2011 census) . It is located at an average height of 7 meters above sea level on the right bank of the Rupnarayan . The city is located 55 km southwest of Calcutta .
The city of Tamralipta is said to have been located on the site of the place in ancient times. Archaeological artifacts made of copper and other material with Greek inscriptions are kept in the Tamralipta Museum in Tamluk.
The area around Tamluk is mainly used for agriculture. The main crops are pan , cashew, rice, bananas, coconut, cotton and vegetables.
