Manikpara railway accident

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Manikpara railway accident on May 28, 2010 was an attack on the Jnaneswari Express from Haora to Mumbai, southeast of the village of Manikpara and the Sardiha station , India , with an oncoming freight train subsequently driving into the derailed passenger car. 148 people were killed.

Starting position

In the Indian state of West Bengal , underground groups of the Maoist Naxalites had been active since 1967 . Their strategy included terrorist attacks on the infrastructure , primarily the railway infrastructure .

On the night of 27 to 28 May, they removed a 50 cm long piece of track from the double-track route . They allegedly mixed up the tracks and stated after the accident - to which they "confessed" after hesitation - that the target of the attack was actually the freight train.

The “Jnaneswari Express”, a night express train of the highest quality of the Indian State Railways , was on the way here at around 1:30 am at Jhargram in the Pashchim Medinipur district in West Bengal . It consisted of a locomotive and 13 passenger cars , including ten sleeping cars .

the accident

Due to the darkness at night, the engine driver could not see the damaged area in the track . The train derailed when it passed them. All 13 wagons of the train derailed, four of which tipped over into the clearance profile of the track in the opposite direction. A freight train running there in the opposite direction drove into these vehicles .

Immediately after the accident there was a rumor that it had been a bomb attack, but this was not confirmed in retrospect.

consequences

148 people were killed and more than 200 others injured. The rescue and recovery work turned out to be very difficult because the scene of the accident was very remote. The investigation into the cause of the accident has been delegated to the Central Bureau of Investigation . A local group close to the Naxalites, the People's Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCPA), was identified as being responsible for the attack based on leaflets found by the police at the scene of the accident.

Night rail traffic was suspended in areas threatened by the Naxalites.
