Raiganj is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal .
The city is the capital of the Uttar Dinajpur district . Raiganj has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 26 wards (constituencies).
Demographics
According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 183,612 and that of the metropolitan area is 199,690. Raiganj has a gender ratio of 905 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 81.7% in 2011. Almost 97% of the population are Hindus , around 2% are Muslims and around 1% belong to another or no religion. 8.9% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.
Infrastructure
Raiganj train station is on the Borzoi-Radhikapur branch line. The city has been connected to the national rail network since 1896. The city is also connected to Kolkata by a national highway.
education
The Raiganj University is a public university. It became a university in August 2015. It used to be a college that was affiliated with the University of North Bengal .
