Uttarpara is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal . The city is part of the Kolkata agglomeration .
The city belongs to the Hugli district . Uttarpara has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 26 wards .
Uttarpara is home to the Uttarpara Jayakrishna Public Library , Asia's oldest free public library.
Demographics
The city's population is 159,147 according to the 2011 census. Uttarpara has a gender ratio of 955 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 90.7% in 2011. Almost 97% of the population are Hindus , approx. 2% are Muslim and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. 7.4% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.
economy
India's first Hindustan Motors car factory was located in Uttarpara , where the Ambassador model was manufactured. The factory closed in 2014 when production of the Ambassador ceased.
Infrastructure
Uttarpara station opened in 1854 and is located on the Howrah - Bardhaman main line .
