The Hindustan Ambassador ("Amby") of the automobile manufacturer Hindustan Motors was built under license in India from 1958 to 2014 based on the model of the Morris Oxford Series III and was a very popular vehicle there among all strata of the population.
The four-door sedan has ample ground clearance. There was a choice of up to five petrol and diesel engines , some of which were supplied by Isuzu , including a 1.5 l naturally aspirated diesel with 38 hp (28 kW) and a 75 hp (55 kW) petrol engine, optionally for the Operation with natural gas or liquid gas can be converted.
Characteristic features of the Ambassador are:
- Double wishbone axle at the front, with stabilizer and torsion bar suspension
- Rigid axle on leaf springs at the rear
- Disc brakes at the front, drum brakes at the rear
- Rear wheel drive
- Manual transmission with 5 gears
Most recently, the Ambassador was also available with air conditioning, power windows and MP3 player.
Production was discontinued in May 2014. On February 11, 2017, Peugeot acquired the rights to the Ambassador car brand for 12 million euros.

In his book The Art of Stylish Impoverishment , the journalist and writer Alexander von Schönburg mentions a used Hindustan Ambassador who ended up in Bonn because of its exoticism as a prime example of a car for someone “with little money and an exquisite taste in cars”.
