from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Graf von Schönburg-Glauchau (born August 15, 1969 in Mogadishu , Somalia ) is a German journalist and writer . He is known under the name of Alexander von Schönburg .

Life

Alexander von Schönburg ( he hardly ever uses the part of the name “- Glauchau ” for his publications) is the son of Joachim Graf von Schönburg-Glauchau and Beatrix Széchenyi de Sárvár-Felsővidék. His siblings are Gloria von Thurn und Taxis , Maya Flick , Carl Alban von Schönburg and his half-sister Anabel Maya-Felicitas from his father's second marriage to Ursula Zwicker.

Activity as a journalist and writer

Alexander von Schönburg became known to a wider public in 1999 as a member of the so-called "pop-cultural quintet" (with Christian Kracht , Eckhart Nickel , Benjamin von Stuckrad-Barre and Joachim Bessing ). He also worked as a freelance journalist (including for Esquire , Die Zeit and Die Weltwoche ). He landed a bestseller in 2005 with The Art of Stylish Impoverishment , in which, according to the publisher's ad, he used the findings from "500 years of family experience in social decline".

Alexander von Schönburg was editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and editor-in-chief of Park Avenue magazine . In 2006, according to the publisher, he gave up this post at his own request and was replaced by Andreas Petzold .

Subsequently, von Schönburg was a columnist for the German edition of Vanity Fair as well as the Bild-Zeitung and Weltwoche . Since 2009 Alexander is Schoenburg of the editorship of the Bild newspaper and there since 2011 Text boss .

Reviews of the works

The happy non-smoker

In his publication The Happy Non-Smoker from 2003, von Schönburg describes the alleged difficulty of quitting as a myth that is promoted, among other things, by the cigarette industry. In reality, it is “too easy” to quit smoking “for it to be a significant fight.” Michael Jeisman from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praises this “ de-dramatization ” of weaning and the approach to a “ hedonism of renunciation and the Willpower ":

“In the end, however, von Schönburg takes a deep streak of inner-worldly redemption: an ontological surplus value and a vitalistic principle for the ultimate justification have to be brought in again. There is again talk of personal development, higher self-confidence and a better life. Perhaps a clever move: Aren't all these high values of self-realization waiting to be freed of their aura in future advisors until the heads don't even smoke? "

Ijoma Mangold assesses the book's achievement as the solution to the "darned dialectic of self-determination and self-preservation " and wrote:

“Freedom is part of human dignity. Of course, the freedom to harm yourself too. But you also have the right to do yourself good. "

The art of stylish impoverishment

Stefan Volk from the book magazine condemned the work The Art of Stylish Impoverishment from 2005 as lying and superficial. Schönburg ignores the fact that poverty means the opposite of self-confident renouncement of consumption. “Poverty means not being able to choose. Alexander von Schönburg reads next to nothing about all the constraints, the lack of freedom to make decisions, and existential fears. Instead, he calls on people to submit to their fate joyfully and playfully. That is extremely conservative, deeply lying and cynical to the core. "

After a detailed summary, Dorothea Dohms comes to the conclusion that it is difficult to imagine that those affected by Hartz IV and one-euro jobbers could find some pleasure in these “letters from the aristocratic Krähwinkel”. “Cui bono then? A glossary that is funny and worth reading and that gets to the heart of the matter unfortunately makes a book that is irrelevant for most readers less worth reading. "
