Ödön of Szechenyi

Gróf Széchenyi Ödön György István Károly (German also Count Edmund Stephan Karl Széchenyi , born December 14, 1839 in Pozsony , † March 24, 1922 in Constantinople ) was a Hungarian fire service pioneer and pasha in Istanbul.

Ödön Széchenyi, the second oldest son of István Széchenyi, studied extinguishing fire extensively in London . In 1863 he came back from there and in Hungary asked the municipalities to set up volunteer fire brigades . Before the Austro-Hungarian settlement in 1867, however, this was practically impossible for political reasons. Only in Sopron did the German teacher Friedrich Rösch manage to found a fire brigade association as early as 1866. After the equalization, he succeeded in founding a volunteer fire brigade in Budapest in 1869, which was converted into a professional fire brigade in 1870 . It was the third professional fire brigade on the continent. Széchenyi was the first commander of twelve firefighters.

A fire brigade was founded in Kőszeg as early as 1868.

From 1871 to 1874 Széchenyi was also the first commandant of the Hungarian National Fire Brigade Association . Széchenyi was already thinking very spaciously. For example, he proposed a European Fire Brigade Day on the Fire Brigade Day in Klagenfurt in 1871 , where he participated as a representative of Transleithania .

At the request of Emperor Franz Joseph , Széchenyi went to Constantinople to set up a fire service at the Sultan's court , which he succeeded in a very short time. This strictly militarily organized fire brigade was also subordinate to the War Ministry. The head of this battalion was Count Széchenyi Pasha. He was the first Christian to receive the title of Passover.

With this structure, numerous suppliers from Austria-Hungary also took the opportunity to gain a foothold in this area. Equipment such as helmets, hoses, etc. Ä. one found thereby in the successor states after the Balkan Wars, like Greece, Bulgaria or Romania.

Széchenyi also had a significant influence on the development of Hungarian navigation on the Danube. He also initiated the construction of the funicular, the Budavári Sikló, on Castle Hill in Budapest.

His written estate, which provides information about his life as well as that of his brother Béla Széchenyi , is in the Széchényi National Library .
