The Budavári Sikló is a funicular in Budapest . It leads from the Danube bank to the castle district on the castle hill .

The funicular opened in 1870 and is one of the oldest funiculars in the world. The construction of the railway for the transport of passengers took place on the initiative of Ödön Széchenyi , the son of István Széchenyi . It completed its first test drive on October 23, 1869 and opened on March 2, 1870. It was the second in Europe, its wagons came from the Kk state-authorized machine factory and wagon construction company Johann Spiering from Vienna . A similar system previously only existed in Lyon . The railway line was crossed by two pedestrian bridges, which were removed in 1900 to expand the castle garden. They were rebuilt in 1983 according to the original plans.

In 1920 the railway was communalized and is therefore today operated by BKV Zrt. operated. During the Second World War , both the track and the wagons were destroyed by bombs . It was only rebuilt in 1983.

The valley station is opposite the Széchenyi chain bridge on Clark Ádám tér , the mountain station is at Szent György tér on Castle Hill.
