Ijoma Alexander Mangold (born March 2, 1971 in Heidelberg ) is a German literary critic of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit and an author.

Live and act

Ijoma Mangold grew up with his mother, a child and adolescent psychotherapist born in Silesia , in Dossenheim . He only met his father, a Nigerian pediatric surgeon, and his second family when he was twenty-two. He sees himself, he writes ironically, as a “completely unfundamentalist second generation expellee from Silesia”. His appearance, with which he "clearly missed the class goal of the Nuremberg Race Laws ", he only once made the subject of an anecdotal newspaper article. “It was at the time when the parties were discussing the German dominant culture .” As a teenager, he read his way through world literature thanks to his mother's bookcase. His favorite reading was Marcel Proust 's In Search of Lost Time . In addition, his mother introduced him to plays and operas. During his youth, singer Kofi “Linguist” Yakpo from the Heidelberg hip-hop group Advanced Chemistry was one of Mangold's more distant friends.

After attending the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Heidelberg , Ijoma Mangold studied literature and philosophy in Munich and Bologna from 1991 . From 2000 to 2001 he worked as an editor for the Berliner Zeitung , from 2001 as a feature editor for the Süddeutsche Zeitung . Since April 2009 Ijoma Mangold has been the deputy head of the features section of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , where he is responsible for literature. He gave his inaugural lecture on The Participation of the Moral Ego in Literary Criticism . In 2014/2015 he held a one-year visiting professorship in St. Louis / USA.

In successor to Elke Heidenreich , he moderated the ZDF literature program Die Vorleser together with Amelie Fried from July 2009 to December 2010 . With Thea Dorn , Denis Scheck and Felicitas von Lovenberg he belonged to the presenters quartet literature air since 2013 worth reading of the SWR -Fernsehens. In the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Jan Wiele commented on Ijoma Mangold's autobiography and called the book, which could also be described as a novel, "impressive". The author rejects psychoanalysis, but analyzes himself. The title is "brilliantly chosen". On the one hand, the German crocodile is the name of a locomotive in Germany and, in a more expensive version, in Switzerland, and on the other hand it is an allusion to its African origin. Ijoma Mangold explained in the television program Sternstunde Philosophie of the Swiss TV broadcaster SRF in February 2018:

“It wasn't until I was writing that I realized that, for example, there are behaviors of mine that are clearly a reaction to my appearance. A prophylactic reaction, if you like. So this somewhat exaggerated, pungent High German, which I hit and speak so quickly, I think I always tried: I don't look like a German, but let me just say one sentence, then you won't have any more doubts about my passport . "

Awards

In 2007 Ijoma Mangold received the Berlin Prize for Literary Criticism . The jury recognized “the accuracy and empathy” with which Mangold shaped literary criticism as a literary genre.
