Will strengthening method

The will-strengthening method (WSM) is a method of existential analysis and logotherapy for decision-making or strengthening of determination, perseverance and execution behavior in intentionally pursued projects. Theoretical starting point is the existential analytical concept of will, according to which a “weak will” primarily represents a deficit in the touch of value and / or a lack of clarity in the determination (will). The will-strengthening method is classically indicated in situations in which something is wanted but not done (clinically particularly when there is motivation to quit addiction), or if there is uncertainty about one's own will.

The method developed by Alfried Längle in 1986 on the basis of the theory of meaning and values of existential analysis and social psychological research consists of five steps:

  1. Basic work (factual level): Outlining the spontaneous motives, e.g. B. for alcohol abstinence.
  2. Problem level (creating awareness of the problem and dealing with the inhibition of goals): Problematisation by collecting counter-reasons, competing motives, relativizing possible goals, description of problems to be expected; cognitive stability of the attitude through knowledge of the counter-reasons (to be worked on). Leads to the weighing of the value and presents decisions.
  3. Internalization (establishing a relationship): awakening emotionality by making the implicit values tangible, which should be “palatable” and “understandable” on a sensual level (cognitive relief). Goal: esteem, strengthening relationships.
  4. Horizon of meaning ( expansion of relationships and self-discovery): reflection on the meaning of life, time structure for realization with the beginning in today; Integration of motivation into the concept of life.
  5. Consolidation : Determination, building ahead and practicing (realization): In every situation, catch up with determination again. Facilitating implementation through strategies, methodology and prophylaxis (e.g. medication, behavioral training, socio-educational measures, systemic changes, hiring, dream work, etc.)
