Sensing method
The Sense Acquisition Method (SEM) is a method developed by Alfried Längle as part of Logotherapy in 1988, which operationalizes the process of finding meaning in four successive stages. This was done on the basis of the extended logotherapeutic definition of existential meaning, which is described in continuation of Frankl's definition as "the most valuable possibility in a situation" (Längle 1988).
The levels relate to the four basic dimensions of human interaction with the world:
- Perception (information processing, recognition)
- Feeling (feeling of value)
- Thinking (judging, deciding)
- Action (execution, practice)
Meaning first refers to the reality to be recognized (givens and conditions) and the scope (possibilities) it contains. Sensing and sensing the values creates a hierarchy of perceived realities and possibilities. This forms the basis for the volitional act of the third step (see also will-strengthening method ), in which the person decides on the greatest value that can now be realized through them. The implementation of this value and the energetic focus on its realization only makes complete sense: In getting involved, the meaning receives its existential weight.
Existential sense thus includes the following qualities :
Reality and feasibility; Emotionality; Cognition, freedom and conscientiousness; Commitment, responsibility and activity. The method is commonly known as “4 W”: perceiving , evaluating. Choosing and acting. It represents the theoretical framework of the existence scale (Längle, Orgler, Kundi 2000) and outlined the development of the basic motivations of the existential analysis .
