Decimus Valerius Asiaticus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Decimus Valerius Asiaticus (* around 5 BC; † 47 AD) was a Roman politician and senator .

Asiaticus came from Vienna in the Gallia Narbonensis and worked his way up as homo novus . As the first Roman from Vienna, he became a suffect consul in 35 . Asiaticus was friends with Caligula , who insulted him at a feast. Asiaticus is therefore said to have given the main impetus for Caligula's murder. However, his co-conspirator Lucius Annius Vinicianus prevented Asiaticus from seizing control. The new emperor Claudius was initially cautious towards Asiaticus, but took him on as a comes in his command during his campaign in Britain in 43 .

In 46 Asiaticus became consul for the second time . His strong personality and relationships with the Gallic upper class made him suspicious. Above all his gardens, originally laid out by Lucullus on the Pincio in Rome, aroused the greed of Messalina , who made him accuse of inciting the soldiers and of adultery with Poppaea Sabina . Accused by the notorious prosecutor Publius Suillius Rufus and convicted in a secret trial by the Imperial Court, Asiaticus opened his veins in 47. He left behind his wife Lollia Saturnina and a son named Decimus Valerius Asiaticus.
