Publius Suillius Rufus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Publius Suillius Rufus was a Roman politician, senator, and prosecutor under Emperor Claudius .

Suillius was a son of Vistilia and thus stepbrother of the general Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo and Milonia Caesonia, the fourth wife of the emperor Caligula . He was married to Ovid's stepdaughter . His sons were Suillius Caesonianus and Marcus Suillius Nerullinus .

Suillius' official career has only been handed down in fragments. It is known that he was decemvir stlitibus iudicandis , between 15 and 18 quaestor of Germanicus , legate of an unknown legion (17/19?) And praetor (23?). Between 41 and 45 Suillius was the suffect consulate , after which he administered the province of Asia as proconsul .

Under Claudius he was a feared accuser. Among his victims were Iulia , the daughter of Drusus Caesar and Livilla , the elder Poppaea Sabina and numerous consulars, including Cornelius Lupus and Decimus Valerius Asiaticus . His eloquence enabled him to evade Senate indictment. Under Emperor Nero , at the instigation of Seneca, whom he offended, Suillius was charged with extortion and, despite his old age, banished to the Balearic Islands .
