North Dum Dum ( Bengali উত্তর দমদম ) is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal with around 250,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is located in the Uttar 24 Pargana district and is part of the Kolkata agglomeration . It is located north of downtown Kolkata and borders the communities of South Dum Dum and Dum Dum .
history
North Dum Dum Congregation was founded in 1870. The name is derived from a British armory called Dum Dum Arsenal.
The city experienced rapid population growth when it was overrun by a wave of refugees from what was then East Pakistan when India was partitioned in 1947 .
Demographics
Official population statistics have only been kept and published regularly since 1991; for North Dum Dum there are, however, older figures. The strong increase in the urban population is mainly due to the immigration of families from rural regions.

The city's population is 249,142 according to the 2011 census. North Dum Dum has a gender ratio of 973 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 91.0% in 2011. Almost 93.1% of the population are Hindus , approx. 6.3% are Muslims , approx. 0.1% each are Christians and Sikhs , approx. 0.1% are Buddhists and about 0.1% belong to other or no religions. 7.4% of the population are children under six years of age.
Infrastructure
The Kolkata Metro is currently (2019) being expanded to the area of the city.
