South Dum Dum ( Bengali : দক্ষিণ দমদম , South Dam Dam ) is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal with around 403,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is located in the Uttar 24 Pargana district and is part of the Kolkata agglomeration .
history
The South Dum Dum Congregation was founded in 1870. The name is derived from a British armory called Dum Dum Arsenal.
The city experienced rapid population growth when it was overrun by a wave of refugees from what was then East Pakistan when India was partitioned in 1947 .
population
Official population statistics have only been kept and published regularly since 1991; for South Dum Dum there are, however, older figures. The strong increase in the urban population is mainly due to the immigration of families from rural regions.
