Count Antoine-François Bertrand de Molleville , also Antoine-François de Bertrand , (born October 25, 1744 in Toulouse , † October 19, 1818 in Paris ) was a French politician and minister.

Life

He was considered a fiery partisan of kings and was an enfant terrible of the monarchy. In 1766 he was first appointed to the Parlement de Toulouse , then in 1774 as the collector of the income and finally in 1784 as the director of Brittany . Bertrand de Molleville was indicted in 1788 for the difficult task of dissolving the Parliament of Brittany. Through his experience in this regard, he advised Louis XVI. when convening the Estates General. From 1790 to 1792 he was Minister for the Navy and the Colonies. He organized the mass emigration of officers. Due to numerous denunciations, he withdrew from his offices and became head of the royal secret police. Before and after August 10, 1792, he tried to organize an escape for the king, but he finally had to make up his mind to flee to England himself.
