Kamarhati ( Bengali : কামারহাটি ) is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal with around 330,000 inhabitants (2011 census). It is located in the Uttar 24 Pargana district and is part of the Kolkata agglomeration .

history

Kamarhati originated in 1899 from parts of the Baranagar community. During the British rule it was a place with bungalows and gardens where rich Babu from Calcutta their time spent. The city experienced rapid population growth when it was overrun by a wave of refugees from what was then East Pakistan when India was partitioned in 1947 .

Official population statistics have only been kept and published regularly since 1991; for Kamarhati, however, there are also older figures. The strong increase in the urban population is mainly due to the immigration of families from rural regions.

Kamarhati has a gender ratio of 939 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The city had a literacy rate of 87.67% in 2011 (men: 90.24%, women: 84.93%). Literacy is thus far above the national average and that of West Bengal. Almost 72.4% of the population are Hindus , approx. 26.9% are Muslims , approx. 0.1% each are Sikhs and Christians and approx. 0.4% did not indicate any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 7.7% of the population are children under 6 years of age. 35.3% live in slums and slums.

Infrastructure

The city has two train stations in its immediate vicinity that connect it to Kolkata and the rest of India.

With the College of Medicine & Sagore Dutta Hospital , founded in 2010 , the city has a modern hospital.
