Catherine Sulem (* 1957 in Bir Mourad Raïs , Algeria ) is a Canadian mathematician and violinist.

life and work

Sulem grew up in Nice and received his doctorate in 1979 at the University of Paris-Nord under Claude Williams Bardos with the dissertation Quelques resultats de regularite pour des equations de mecanique des fluides . She then worked at the École normal supérieure in Paris before coming to the University of Toronto in 1990 . She deals with nonlinear partial differential equations from physical contexts such as fluid mechanics , nonlinear optics and plasma physics. She works with analytical as well as numerical methods such as functional analysis, asymptotic developments and numerical simulations and has also contributed to understanding the singularities in wave propagation models. Together with her brother Pierre-Louis Sulem, she wrote a monograph entitled Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation: Self-focusing Instability and Wave Collapse , which was published in Springer's collection of applied mathematical sciences . She has served on the editorial board of several journals, including the Canadian Journal of Mathematics (1999-2005) and the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis (2001-2010).

In 2019, she gave the AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture entitled The Dynamics of Ocean Waves at the 7th International Congress of Industrial and Applied Mathematics in Valencia . These lectures are selected jointly by the Association of Women in Mathematics and SIAM .

Sulem studied violin at the Conservatoire de Nice and then joined the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris, where she won the Premier Prix de Violon du Conservatoire de Paris in 1975 in the classes of Roland Charmy and Jean Hubeau . She took part in concerts in France, Germany, Israel and Canada, gave numerous concerts with the orchestras of Radio France and was solo violinist with the Israel Sinfonietta from 1982 to 1987.
