Paolo Basso (born October 31, 1966 in Besnate ( Lombardy )) is a Swiss wine merchant and sommelier . He is the winner of the 2013 World Cup of Best Sommeliers in Tokyo.

biography

Paolo Basso was born in Italy and now lives in the canton of Ticino with dual citizenship from Italy and Switzerland. He studied at the Hotel Management School Sondalo in Valtellina (Italy) and continued his training at the Swiss Association of Professional Sommelier (ASSP). Today he is a member of the ASSP and head of the competitions.

He gained his experience in the oenology segment at Badaracco and Arvi, two leading Swiss companies in this field. He worked worldwide as a consultant for the Kempinski hotel group and as a lecturer at the École hôtelière de Lausanne . He has also worked with the brands Nespresso, Acqua Panna, S. Pellegrino and Carrefour France and contributed to the success of the famous "Foire aux Vins", where he put together the Carrefour Group's well-known wine selection as sommelier and consultant.

He has worked in various gastronomic restaurants, which have been recognized by the most important gastronomy guides, as a sommelier and in the function of a consultant for the Weinkaraten.

His first success in sommelier competitions was the title of Best Sommelier in Switzerland in 1997 . In 2018 he received an Honoris Causa doctorate for his commitment to imparting knowledge of oenology.

Paolo Basso is one of the 6 sommeliers in the world who have won both the title of Best Sommelier in Europe (2010 in Strasbourg) and Best Sommelier in the world (2013 in Tokyo).

He is a member of the jury of tasting competitions such as the Decanter World Wine Award in London, the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse in Sierre, the 5 Stars Wines Award at Vinitaly in Verona and works regularly with various specialist magazines, such as Sommeliers International. He is also a member of the Technical Committee of the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI), which is responsible for organizing sommelier competitions worldwide.

He teaches at the Glion Institute of Higher Education, the Changins Wine School and the Worldsom Academy in Bordeaux. He is a lecturer, organizer of enogastronomic events, consultant for wine selection and works with the organization Swiss Wine Promotion to promote Swiss wines.

As an entrepreneur, he runs Paolo Basso Wine, based in Lugano , advises and sells quality wines at home and abroad. He is also a wine producer in Ticino. Since 2014 he has been selecting wines for the airline Air France, which was awarded the "Best Airline Wine List of the World" award in 2018 and 2019.

In 2014 he was elected Sommelier of the Year by the Comitato Grandi Cru d'Italia and in 2016 he received the Maestro d'Arte e Mestieri Prize, awarded by the Cologni Foundation of the Masters of Crafts and Alma International School of Italian Cuisine.
