Baranagar or Barahanagar ( Bengali বরানগর ) is a city ( Municipal Council ) with approx. 250,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan area ( agglomeration ) of Calcutta in the Indian state of West Bengal . Baranagar is the seat of the Indian Statistical Institute .
location
Baranagar is located on the east bank of the Hugli River at a height of approx. 10 m above sea level. d. M. approx. 10 km (driving distance) north of Calcutta. The climate is mostly humid; Rain falls mainly in the monsoon months May to October.

Official population statistics have only been kept and published since 1991. Since the available area is densely built up, further immigration is hardly possible.

Almost 95% of the population are Hindus , almost 3% are Muslims and around 1% are Sikhs ; the rest is made up of Christians , Jains , Buddhists and the like. a. As is usual with censuses in northern India, the male population exceeds the female population by around 8%.
economy
Baranagar is primarily a suburb of Calcutta. There are smaller shops as well as numerous craft and service companies. A jute factory was established on the banks of the Hughli in the 19th century ; there is also a significant agricultural machinery production facility and corresponding suppliers.
history
The favorable location for shipping on the banks of the Hughli led to the settlement of Portuguese and Dutch trading offices in the 16th and 17th centuries , which were then taken over by the British in 1795 .
Attractions
The only attraction of historical and cultural interest is the Joy Mitra Kalibari , a neuntürmiger, the goddess Kali consecrated Bengali temple with several smaller shrines escort from the years 1850-51. Newer Hindu temples are dedicated to Annapurna and Omkarnath / Shiva ; a Ramakrishna temple, a Gurdwara of the Sikhs and a mosque are spread over the city area.
