Kalyani is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal .

The city belongs to the Nadia district . Kalyani has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 20 wards (constituencies).

history

Kalyani is still a relatively young city. During the Second World War , an American military base with a landing pad was located in Kalyani, which consisted of 45 villages in the Nadia district. The military garrison town was named after the American President Franklin D. Roosevelt Roosevelt Town or Roosevelt Nagar . Hangars and other memories of the airfield can still be seen in Block A and in some areas of Kalyani University, the buildings of which were erected on or above the runways. After World War II, the American military left the base and the airfield and hangars were closed. The modern city was built in a short time to host the 51st meeting of the Indian National Congress in 1954, which is why it now has the character of a planned city .

Demographics

The city's population is 100,575 according to the 2011 census. Kalyani has a gender ratio of 983 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The literacy rate was 87.9% in 2011. Almost 98% of the population are Hindus , approx. 1% are Muslims and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. 8.2% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.

There are two universities in the Kalyani area, Kalyani University and Bidhan Chandra Agricultural University (which is located in nearby Mohanpur ).

Infrastructure

The Kalyani train station connects the city with Kolkata, which is about 50 km away .
