Sambalpur ( Oriya ସମ୍ବଲପୁର ଜିଲ୍ଲା Sambalapura Jillā ) is a district in the Indian state of Odisha .

In 2011 there were 1,041,099 inhabitants in the district (935,613 inhabitants 10 years earlier). The seat of the district administration is the city ​​of the same name . The area is 6,624 km² (according to other information 6,702 km²). The district was established with the establishment of the state of Odisha. On April 1, 1993, the district of Bargarh and January 1, 1994, the districts of Jharsuguda and Debagarh were separated .

geography

The district is located in the west of the state of Odisha and borders on the districts of Sundargarh , Debagarh, Angul , Sonapur , Bargarh and Jharsuguda. In the north Sambalpur is hilly, in the southeast lies the plateau of Rairakhol with its foothills. The west towards the Mahanadi River is flat land. More than half of the district is forested. Temperatures vary between at least 11.8 ° C in December and up to 47 ° C in May. Annual rainfall is around 1,530 mm, with most of the rain from June to October coming from the southwest monsoons . The Hirakud Reservoir is located in the northwest of the district .

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the gender ratio was 976 women per 1,000 men. 84.35% of men can read and write, but only 67.93% of women, a total of 76.22% of the population can read and write. The majority of the residents (92.61%) are Hindus , Christianity (4.86%) and Islam (1.93%) play only a minor role. Oriya (in the Sambalpuri dialect) is spoken predominantly , in cities also Hindi , Urdu and Bengali , in rural areas also local languages.

The district is predominantly rural, but 27.1% of the population live in cities. Over half of them live in the capital of the district.

The district is divided into three subdivisions : Kuchinda , Rairakhol and Sambalpur .
