The Mayurbhanj District ( Oriya ମୟୂରଭଞ୍ଜ ଜିଲ୍ଲା Maẏūrabhañja Jillā ) is located in the Indian state of Odisha . The administrative seat is the city of Baripada .
The district was created on January 1, 1949, when the princely state of the same name merged with the state of Orissa .
location
The district extends over an area of 10,418 km² and extends from the coastal plain to deep into the hinterland. The rolling hills of Similipal National Park are located within the district.
Residents
In the 2011 census, the population was 2,519,738. The gender ratio was 1006 women for 1000 men. The literacy rate was 63.17% (73.76% for men, 52.71% for women). According to the 2011 census, 83.86% of the population were followers of Hinduism .
Administrative division
The district consists of four sub-divisions : Bamanghati, Baripada, Kaptipada and Panchapid.
