The Angul District ( Oriya ଅନୁଗୋଳ ଜିଲ୍ଲା Anugōḷa Jillā ) is a district in the east Indian state of Odisha .

The district is located in the mountains of the Eastern Ghats in the central north of Odisha. In the south the district is bounded by the Mahanadi river . The administrative seat is the city of Angul . The area is 6375 km². The population density is about 200 inhabitants / km².

The district was formed on April 1, 1993 by separating from the Dhenkanal district.

In 2011 there were 1,273,821 inhabitants in the district. The gender ratio was 943 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 77.53% (85.98% for men, 68.64% for women). The vast majority of the population is Hindu (98.81%).

Administrative division

The district consists of four sub-divisions : Angul, Athmallik, Pallahara and Talcher.

To decentralize the administration, the district is divided into 8 blocks :

• Chhendipada
• Kaniha
• Kishorenagar
• Pallahara
• Talcher

There are also 8 Tahasils :

The following ULBs are located in the district : the two municipalities Angul and Talcher as well as the Notified Area Council (NAC) Athmallik . There are also 209 gram panchayats in the district.
