The Balangir District ( Oriya ବଲାଙ୍ଗୀର ଜିଲ୍ଲା Balāṅgīra Jillā ; also Bolangir ) is a district in the Indian state of Odisha .

In 2011 there were 1,648,997 inhabitants in the district. The seat of the district administration is the city ​​of the same name . The area is 6575 km² (according to other information 6551.5 km²). The district was formed on November 1, 1949. On April 1, 1993, the Sonapur district in the east of Balangir was split off.

geography

Balangir is located in the center of Odisha and borders the districts of Bargarh , Sonpur , Boudh , Kandhamal , Kalahandi and Nuapada . Temperatures vary between at least 16.6 ° C in December and up to 48.7 ° C in May. The annual rainfall is about 1440 mm. The three main rivers are the Suktel and the Lant , which each flow into the Tel in the south of the district. In the northwest of the district are the Gandhamardhan Hills .

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the gender ratio was 987 women per 1,000 men. 64.72% of the population can read and write, of which 75.85% are men, and only 53.50% are women. The majority of the residents (98.13%) are Hindus , Christianity (1%) and Islam (0.5%) only play a subordinate role. Oriya , Hindi and English are spoken predominantly .

The district is more rural, only 11.5% of the population live in cities. Over half of them live in the capital of the district.

economy

Balangir has some mineral resources such as graphite , manganese , quartzite and granite . Nevertheless, agriculture, especially the cultivation of rice and sugar cane , plays a major role.

The district is divided into three sub-divisions : Balangir , Patnagarh and Titlagarh .
