The district of Gajapati ( Oriya ଗଜପତି ଜିଲ୍ଲା Gajapati Jillā ) is located in the Indian state of Odisha .
The district was created on October 2, 1992 by splitting off from Ganjam District . The district was named after Maharaja Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deo (1892-1974), the ex-Raja Sahib of Paralakhemundi Estate and in 1937 the first Prime Minister of Odisha.
The district covers the Eastern Ghats in the south of Odisha. In the southwest, the Vamsadhara River flows over a distance of 25 km along the border with the state of Andhra Pradesh in the south . The district area is 3850 km² (according to other information 4325 km²). The population density was 134 inhabitants / km². The district administration is located in Paralakhemundi .
Residents
In the 2011 census, the population was 577,817. The gender ratio was 1,043 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 53.49% (64.38% for men, 43.18% for women). 61.12% of the population are followers of Hinduism , 37.98% are Christians .
